The story
Untamed Hours was commissioned by a conservation publication to document the Mara's big cats during the hours tourists rarely see — the grey edges of the day when the savannah actually goes to work.
Working with a local guide of twenty years, we tracked a lion pride and a solitary leopard across fourteen days. Wildlife photography is mostly waiting, and the waiting is the privilege: hours of stillness, then forty seconds of action you have one chance to hold onto.
A portion of print proceeds from this series is donated to the conservancy that hosted the project — a practice I've kept for every wildlife commission since.
Behind the scenes
Shot from a beanbag-mounted 400mm lens out of an open Land Cruiser. No baiting, no calls, no off-road driving — the animals set the schedule, always.
