MARLOWE

About the studio

The person behind the lens

Photographer, light-chaser and professional believer in the unposed moment. This is the long version of the story.

Portrait of Elena Marlowe

I found my first camera in my grandfather's attic — a battered rangefinder with a half-shot roll of film still inside. I was eleven. The nineteen frames already on that roll, of people I'd never meet, taught me the first thing I ever knew about photography: a photograph is a time machine, and someone has to be brave enough to build it.

Twelve years into this career, I've photographed weddings on three continents, editorials in places with no electricity, and faces that stopped me mid-sentence. The throughline has never changed — I'm interested in the moment just after people forget the camera exists.

My work sits somewhere between documentary honesty and cinematic intention. I plan obsessively so that the day itself can be improvised; I light carefully so that nothing looks lit. The goal, always, is photographs that feel less like records and more like memories.

The Journey

Twelve years in six chapters

2014

First Camera, First Obsession

Bought a second-hand DSLR with savings from a café job and spent a year photographing strangers in the park until the shyness wore off.

2016

Assisting Years

Two years assisting fashion and wedding photographers across the city — carrying bags, building sets and quietly stealing every lesson available.

2018

Studio Marlowe Opens

Signed the lease on a small north-lit studio and booked the first twelve weddings under my own name in a single spring.

2020

First Editorial Cover

A self-funded fashion series shot during lockdown landed a magazine cover and changed the trajectory of the studio overnight.

2022

International Commissions

First destination season — weddings and campaigns in Italy, Iceland and Morocco, with a carry-on that has never once been under the weight limit.

2025

Gallery Exhibition

'Faces of Silence' exhibited in SoHo; three portraits acquired for private collections, and a long-held dream quietly checked off.
