The story
The brief was beautifully simple: drive from the top of Morocco to the dunes at its edge, and come back with the country's colour. Over twelve days we crossed the Rif, the Atlas and finally the flat gold of the Sahara, photographing the road as much as the destinations.
Travel work lives or dies on the in-between moments — petrol stations at blue hour, tea poured at a thousand metres, the way light falls through a souk's reed ceiling at noon. The feature ran across sixteen pages with twenty-two of my photographs.
I came home with 9,000 frames, a carpet I had no room for, and a standing invitation from a guesthouse owner in Merzouga that I fully intend to use.
Behind the scenes
Shot entirely with available light from a rented 4x4. The dune panoramas required climbing the same ridge three evenings in a row to catch a wind-free sunset.
